  • 5 lessons for Building Brand Loyalty

There’s a lot that marketers can learn from the marketing minds behind the entertainer Lady Gaga.

    1. Give fans a name. Gaga doesn’t like the word “fan” so she calls them her “Little Monsters,” named after her album “The Fame Monster.” She even tattooed “Little Monsters” on her arm and tweeted the pic to fans professing love for them. Now fans are getting their own Little Monster tattoos. By giving the group a formal name, it gives fans a way to refer to each other. Fans feel like they are joining a special club.

    2. Make it about something bigger than you. During her concert tour, Gaga recites a “Manifesto of Little Monsters” (text) (video). Although a bit cryptic, most Little Monsters see it as a dedication to them, that her fans have the power to make or break her.

    3. Develop shared symbols. The official Little Monster greeting is the outstretched “monster claw” hand. As all Little Monsters know, the clawed hand is part of the choreography in the video of her song“Bad Romance.” Gaga tells the story of watching a fan in Boston greet another fan with the claw hand and that’s when she knew this was the Little Monster symbol. Even Oprah knows the Little Monster greeting.  Shared symbols allow fans to identify each other and connect.

    4. Make your customers feel like rock stars. One staple of Gaga’s “Monster Ball” tour is to call a fan in the audience during the show. She dials the number onstage, the fan screams out, is located and they are put up on a big screen. While the rest of audience goes bananas, she invites the fan to have a drink with her after the show.

    5. Leverage social media. Gaga has the requisite Facebook fan page (over 5 million fans) and Twitter ID (almost 3 million followers) but it’s how she uses them that drives loyalty. On Twitter, she tells fans what she is doing, such as tweeting them before she opened the Grammy Awards. She alsotweeted to fans that she was buying them pizza for waiting overnight at an album signing.

my new cover video, “Dance in the Dark” by Lady Gaga. you like?

  • I heard the name Nicki Minaj in passing the other day when someone referred to her as the “Lady Gaga of hip hop.” Well, obviously, I wasn’t about to hear that and not do my research. Within the hour I was completely up-to-date on this little package of fabulousness. And I think it’s safe to say that I’m falling head-over-heels in love.

Discovered on Myspace, Nicki Minaj started out in the underground rap scene in 2004. Her daring fashion and fiercely defiant attitude quickly got her noticed by a score of big names in music. She’s been featured on tracks with artists from Lil Wayne to Mariah Carey to Jeffree Star. Most recently, her hugely expressive face can be seen in the video for Ludacris’ new single, “My Chick Bad.”

In August of last year, Nicki was signed to Young Money Entertainment, and she will release her debut album later this year. In the video for her lead single (above) Minaj can be seen dancing in a jungle with monkeys and driving in a pink limo with model Amber Rose. She certainly has the uniqueness to merit her comparison to Gaga, but she doesn’t seem to take herself as seriously as the blonde goddess. She embraces her silliness, trying to avoid falling into the mold of self-objectifying female rappers.

Similar to Gaga, Minaj is a definite supporter of the gay community. In the tradition of gay icons, she’s here to entertain, not just to be hot. Yet she certainly accomplishes the latter with flying colors, shaking her huge (and rumored surgically enhanced) bootay wherever she goes. She herself is openly bisexual, yet she seems to lean more gay than straight.

Keep your eyes on this one, as she seems here to stay. If you’re impatient for more Minaj, look for her appearance on our June/July cover girl’s next single, “Woohoo,” which was officially released today.

Lady Gaga Speaks OUT on Larry King Live

Just in case you missed it, Lady Gaga spent some time talking with Larry King and yes, the subject of gay rights was discussed. The basics, Gaga said that the word ‘gay’ shouldn’t be considered a bad word and “no person is worth any lless than another human being based on their sexual orientation.”
It’s great to hear people who feel this way speak out on national television. Hopefully one day, this type of dialogue will lend to the changing of minds and attitudes.
