by James Hipps It seems like Elton John has been in the news quit a bit lately as there was a pretty heated debate over the fact he took $1 million to perform at Rush Limbaugh’s wedding. I stand divided over the issue. There’s a part of me that finds hypocrisy in John’s willingness to perform for Rush, but then again, Elton is not an American, probably doesn’t care about American politics and it was probably the easiest million he ever made. To be honest, if Rush was going to pay me a million dollars to appear at his wedding, I probably would have as well…But then I would have given that million to help fight for equality. But that’s not to say I don’t understand why people from the LGBT community would be upset. Let’s face it, Rush is no friend to our community, nor is he a friend to anyone in middle or lower class America. He’s a drug addicted college fail-out who has married four times when I don’t even have the right to marry once. It could have been a great service to the LGBT community if Elton John would have said “NO, I’m not playing at your wedding”. It may have sent a clear message to the straight populations that ‘the gays’ aren’t only here to style your hair, arrange your flowers and entertain you…But again, that would have been a political statement and Elton John is not a politician. Now perhaps this latest bit of news about Elton stems from a seen opportunity for redemption or maybe it’s just another easy way for Elton to make money…I’m not sure. But either way, it once again leaves me with a rather mixed reaction. According to Seattle PI, Elton is set to team up with Lady Gaga to record what Elton is referring to as “the new gay anthem.” Elton John can’t wait to work with Lady Gaga again because he considers the colorful pop star his “b**tard daughter.” He adds, “It’s f**king amazing. ‘Born This Way,’ which is the title song, will completely get rid of Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive.’ This is the new ‘I Will Survive’… This is the new gay anthem.” So is this really about giving the gay community ownership of something we can hold on to or is it simply another way to pad his pocketbook? Is he being assuming in his thought the gay community will accept and not reject his endeavor simply because Lady Gaga is on board or is it just another case of Elton not being a politician? What are your thoughts?
You may not know who this guy is, but a ten page feature article in the Feb. 2010 issue of the New Yorker sure knew how to describe him; “His eccentric style and vertiginous high notes helped make him one of the most acclaimed praise singers of the past decade, and, for a time, one of the most successful. He had a certain hip-hop swagger and the status of a sex symbol.”A Brilliant Catastrophe THE MOVIE : part 1
-The New Yorker
THE NEW YORKER article documented the first chapter of this controversial former gospel superstars exit & entry into mainstream. To accompany it is a project that took over a year to make & a film that documented his journey every step of the way: A BRILLIANT CATASTROPHE—- the movie
Already referred to as an Avant-Garde film allowing fans and critics alike a look into the complexity and sometimes novelty of recording activist/ songwriter/ actor @BSLADE formerly known as Gospel Artist Tonex™. The film documents his life after transitioning from Gospel Music Superstar to gospel music’s fallen star turn Acid Rock Funk Captain @BSLADE. A quirky yet provocative film of which tells the story of a sometimes self-destructive ever changing mad scientist of a rock star who struggles to cope with the constant pressures of his career and the demands of his time, money and recovery following the tragic loss of both of his parents who were pastors. After retiring from being the heir to their 15 year long legacy & empire to follow his heart’s path down uncharted territory, @BSLADE created what has been heralded by even his worst critics as his best work: the double disc ” A BRILLIANT CATASTROPHE” was chronicled in a musical opus that has the twitter community buzzing including Ledesi, Lalah Hathaway, & Frankie Knuckles just to name a few. After seeing this film Hollywood insiders have asked “Is it okay to like a film but not really understand it?”
The answer is yes, of course. And “A BRILLIANT CATASTROPHE” is a movie you will have to see at least twice & an album that has become THE staple soundtrack to the the Fall of 2010. The projects crux is contradiction, parallel paradox and religious cynicism and not easy to navigate under the best of circumstances. But this much is clear: “ABC,” which evolves at one point into three simultaneous films, is gorgeous, bizarre, and mesmerizing. Does it make sense? Hard to say. Is it fascinating to watch? Definitely. You will leave your computer totally captivate and throttled by it.
